Historia ma swój początek w górniczym miasteczku na północy Anglii, w czasie górniczych strajków 1984/85 roku. Nieoczekiwanie nastoletni Billy objawia swój niezwykły talent do tańca, który każe mu przenieść się z bokserskiego ringu do sali baletowej i rozpocząć podróż do sławy, która porwie całą rodzinę i napełni dumą lokalną społeczność, a przede wszystkim odmieni życie chłopca.

Do ekipy, która pracowała nad filmem – scenarzysty Lee Halla (autora libretta i piosenek), reżysera Stephena Daldry'ego oraz choreografa Petera Darlinga – dołączył legendarny Elton John (muzyka). Wspólnie stworzyli wspaniały spektakl, który głęboko zapada w pamięć.
